What is SavingStar About? Grocery App Without Scanning Receipts
There are several grocery shopping apps I like to use – Ibotta, Fetch Rewards, Checkout 51, Receipt Hog. Why not maximize my rewards and use all the coupons and offers I can find, if I have to spend this money anyway?
SavingStar.com perfectly fits in my collection, as it has unique features and coupons that are not available with other grocery apps.
Ibotta works only with specific participating stores and requires checking and activating the offers prior to scanning the receipts.
Fetch Rewards allows you to scan receipts from ANY grocery store in the US and gives you additional credits for purchasing from the participating brands.
The best part of SavingStar is that you can link your membership cards for approved store chains and you don’t need to spend time on scanning the receipts. You don’t have to download the app at all if you prefer to manage the rebates on the laptop.
Another great feature is that you can join continuous offers with the specific brands and earn cashback anytime you buy from these brands, without a need to check and activate the offers.
Now let me dive into the SavingStar review with all the details. I’ll show you how to sign up and use this awesome app.

Is SavingStar A Legit App Or A Scam?
SavingStar was launched in 2011 and grew to more than 7 million members. Among its investors, you can find American Express and Flybridge Capital Partners. Recently, I’ve seen a lot of improvements on the SavingStar’s website, from visual design to more relevant offers. Seems like there is more to come.
Does SavingStar make money for you? Well, I would call it mostly saving money rather than making money, as you need to pay for all the products before you can get any rebate.
It’s absolutely legitimate. I have saved more than $60 with my Saving Star account and requested two direct payments to my bank account.
How Does SavingStar Work?
The process is very simple. Just follow the steps below.
SavingStar Sign Up
First, you need to sign up on SavingStar website, using your email address or Facebook account and complete the quick registration process. It’s free! You wouldn’t be required to provide your credit card.

Download the SavingStar app (optional)
You can get the SavingStar app for iPhone or Android, however, it’s not a requirement. It’s absolutely possible to manage on the website only.
Add Stores – Link Loyalty Cards To SavingStar Account
Select “Stores” from the top menu, find your favorite stores and add the membership or loyalty cards numbers. You can add more than one card per store if you have multiple card holders in your household.
Some of the popular stores that allow linking the card are BJ’s, Shoprite, Wegmans, CVS, Stop & Shop, Rite Aid, Kmart and Fresh Market.
There are additional participating stores where you can manually upload the receipts. This list includes Costco, Dollar General, ACME markets, Family Dollar, Kroger, Sam’s club, Target, Walmart, Walgreens and more.
Alcohol rebates can be redeemed by uploading a receipt from ANY liquor store. I think it’s a great bonus!
Find And Activate SavingStar Rebates
The selection of rebates on SavingStar is not huge, but there are many coupons in $1-$4 range. Some of the popular participating brands are General Mills, Goya, Nature Valley, Mott’s, Yoplait, Annie’s, Viva, Country Crock, Mentos, Turkey Hill and more.
There are three unique types of offers at SavingStar:
One Or Many
This type of rebate sets a spending goal for a specific group of qualified products of a brand. You can purchase the required amount in one shopping trip or split between several trips within the defined period of time. Tracking the progress towards the goal shows on SavingStar.com. Once the goal is reached, the credit will be added to your account within several days.
Always On Programs
This is one of the best features, as you only need to activate the offer once and you will earn the rewards for every purchase of the qualifying products as long as the program keeps running.
Healthy Offers
If you redeem at least two rebates during the prior calendar month, you are eligible for a weekly healthy offer – a rebate on some kind of produce.
Each offer has an expiration date. Don’t forget to use the ones you like before they expire.
Redeem The Offers
Linked Membership cards
You must use your linked card at the register. You’ll receive the credit for activated and used offers within 2-7 days.
Receipt Scan stores
It’s recommended to submit the receipt as soon as you can. The rules say that you have until three days after the rebate’s expiration date.
SavingStar – Request Payout
You can request the payment by clicking on “Cash Out” button on the top menu. Chose the payment method from direct bank deposit, PayPal or gift cards. The processing time is usually 1-2 days.
Here is my request for a direct deposit of $38.30:
How Much Money Can You Make With SavingStar?
Everybody’s shopping habits are different. Some people buy a lot of branded items, others mostly stay with fresh produce and private label products. The bigger family you have, the more you buy from large stores and well-known brands, the higher your earnings will be.
As other grocery apps, SavingStar is not meant to be a side hustle. It’s a saving app. Therefore, it would be reasonable to expect to save anywhere between $5 to $20 a month.
How To Maximize SavingStar Rewards?
1. Check the available offers at least once a week. You can choose to receive emails with new offers digest to remind you about activating the rebates.
2. If you shop at stores without linked loyalty card, scan your receipts regularly, at least once a week. Make it a part of your shopping routine. I scan my receipts just after I’m back home and done with emptying my bags into the pantry and refrigerator.
3. Don’t buy anything you don’t really need. Make your meal plan and write down the shopping list before you look at the app.

MoCashForYou Verdict – SavingStar is not a Scam
SavingStar is a legitimate app. I recommend it to anyone who wants to save on grocery shopping.
If you have a family and buy most of the groceries in one of the participating stores, I’m sure you’ll be able to accumulate a nice amount after several months of using SavingStar.
For bachelors who mostly eat out or visit local farmer markets, the earning options probably will be limited to wine and spirits. Which is also not bad after all…
As I said at the beginning, my favorite additional grocery shopping apps are Ibotta and Fetch Rewards.

Hi Mary,
Thanks again for another great review of a product to save money! I don’t have any rewards cards. I do most of my shopping at Walmart. Do you know if they have the card I would need to use Saving Star?
Thanks again for info on the product. I have now signed up with two of your suggestions and have saved over $15! It may not seem like much, but it all adds up! I use Fetch Rewards and CoinOut.
Best wishes,
Karin 🙂
Hi Karin,
Saving Star works with Walmart, but not in an automated way. To redeem rebates at Walmart, you’ll need to submit photos of your receipts. Add this store to make it easy to submit receipts later.
This is one of the reasons I posted several grocery saving apps here. Everyone can choose what works the best for his specific shopping style.
Thank you
Mary
Great. Thanks for checking on that for me!
Hey Mary,
I’m a big fan of saving money. I remember a while ago a friend told me about a Walmart app that gives you money off when you purchase stuff from Walmart. I have used it a couple times and actually saved some decent money. But, it looks like you can use it at a lot more places.
I like the idea of getting money to PayPal or possibly gift cards, too. Where are the gift cards from? Can you get Amazon gift cards with the Savingstar App?
Hi Garen,
That’s a great question.
Currently, SavingStar offers Starbucks, iTunes and AMC theatres gift codes. I think PayPal is the best option. Personally, I just use a direct deposit option, but some people might not be comfortable giving their bank account information.
Walmart app is great, but it’s only for shopping at Walmart. Other apps give you more flexibility. The best thing is – you can use them all! When I come home from shopping, I scan my receipts to 3-4 different apps. Why leave money on the table?
Thank you for stopping by and happy savings
Mary
Hi Mary!
This is a very good post and you did bring in some good information!
Would be really food if we could have something similar here in UK, but so far I never found something like this!
Thank you…
Hi Selene,
I’m so sorry to hear you don’t have any grocery app in the UK. It’s really strange. I’ll post if I find anything.
Mary
Thanks for providing informative article! You have shown one of the nice way to save money. You have provided detailed information about Saving star.
Hi Kavitha,
I’m happy to help. I think we should use every free app to cut a bit on the grocery expenses. There always is a better use for this money, right?
